I was hassled for breastfeeding last week. I wound up leaving with my baby still hungry and my six year-old in tears. I might write more about it but the facts there are actually somewhat irrelevant. What irks me most is the insufficient reply on the part of the organization.
I am adding to this post as I am able. Here is a short version of what happened.
I took Gray to his first Scout meeting of the year. Actually, his first Den meeting ever.
I was asked by a Scout Volunteer to breastfeed in another room b/c some of the boys might not have “seen that sort of thing before” I declined. I was asked to cover up. I refused.
I informed the woman of the TX law. I also told her I had been at work all day and I had not fed my baby since the morning.
She would not stop talking to me - in the room or in the hall.
We started to leave the building but Gray was so upset that I decided to try to go back for him.
I was stopped in the hallway and was told that:
Texas law gives parents the right to beat their children but Cub Scouts does not allow that at their activities.
I was stunned.
We left. And I nursed Morgan in a wrap while walking home.

Subject: Question regarding nursing at scout functions
Good Morning Mr. Coyle,
Thank you for your time on the phone yesterday.
I am still a bit confused about our last conversation and I would
like some fairly simple clarification.
Am I welcome to nurse my children at any scout function at any time
without restriction? (for example, not covering up)
Thank You and I look forward to your response.

in response to this question:
Molly,
You are welcome to nurse your child at any Scout function and at any time,
so long as it is done in a discreet manner. You should keep in mind that
parents may be concerned by a mother who is overly-exposed while breast
feeding, especially if they feel uncomfortable for their own child’s sake.
The purpose of Scouting activites is to further the best interests of the
Scouts and to keep distractions to a minimum. As a parent myself, I know I
would appreciate nursing mothers trying to be heedful of others’ reasonable
concerns.
Sincerely,
John Coyle
